North Carolina Property Mappers Association

Mapping the future since 1980

Tammy Southern – Forsyth County
President 2008

It’s that time of year again…

I always look forward to receiving my new copy of the Legend. I know it connects me to the rest of the membership including the “Smarties” covering this state that can offer advice and share experiences they have encountered in their realm of GIS and Mapping. I really don’t think that North Carolina would be one of the national GIS leaders it is if it weren’t for the widespread connections we have and the on-going communication we share.

Where is everybody going? Are our NCPMA members and colleagues are abandoning us for retirement? Everyone in your office is affected when your “experience” leaves. The same is true for the NCPMA. It seems like just in the past several years we have lost some “valuable experience” as longtime members, aka Old Timers, have retired. Hopefully some of their knowledge and skill was passed on to us and one day we can do the same. We are also gaining in new younger members that have GIS training that is now offered in many colleges and schools where many of us didn’t have that opportunity before. They bring with them new ideas, techniques, and know-how. This provides a great opportunity for us older, oops, I mean ‘Mature’ Mappers to learn something new from them. Mapping just ain’t what it used to be!

Please keep in mind that the NCPMA is here for YOU! The Executive Board and other committees are in constant communication trying to keep you informed and up to date with what’s happening. The road ahead offers many challenges to us all. Hopefully being a member of this fine organization will at least help you over the ‘speed bumps’ on the infinite highway of Mapping.

Feel free to contact me anytime with any concerns or suggestions you may have. I value every member’s opinion and ideas.

Take Care and God Bless You All,

Tammy Southern
2008 NCPMA President
